Chamunda, the fearsome form of Devi
Found in Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh) and now on display at the State Museum, Bhopal, this head is dated to about the 10th century CE. The sculpture shows Chamunda’s emaciated, terrifying visage—gaping mouth, prominent eyes, and a tall crown detailed with skull motifs—all hallmarks of her iconography as the destroyer of evil.
Likely once part of a larger temple image, it’s a striking example of medieval central Indian craftsmanship and Shakta imagery.
Chamunda is the protector of dead and the living. The origins of the goddess and her worship are believed to be tribal – from central India. Tribes used to sacrifice humans and animals with liquor to keep Chamunda Devi pleased.
