About Product

Type: Display sculpture

Arguably showing one of the earliest depictions of Shiva, the Pasupati seal is one of the more intricate and detailed seal among hundreds other found in the excavations in Indus Valley settlements.

The seal shows a human figure performing Mulabandhasan yoga pose an advanced yoga position, not very easy to perform. The figure is wearing thorn like crown and is surrounded by elephant, tiger, rhino, buffalo and deer. The figure has 3 heads and is wearing bangles in his hand. There is also a distinctly visible erect penis further suggesting that the figure is proto-shiva.

On the top is the undeciphered script from Indus Valley.

The design in itself is unique. However, a few seals do exist with the same three headed human figure.

One must ask, if an advanced Yoga position like the Mulbandhasana was prevelant in ~2000 BCE, how old is Yoga really?
