About Product
Type: Display sculpture
The Yali pillar at Bhoga Nandeeswara temple is one of the finest examples of Vijayanagara artistry, where myth and imagination take a tangible form in stone.
The Yali, a composite creature with the body of a lion, the trunk of an elephant, and at times the tail of a serpent, is often shown with a warrior rider. Symbolically, it represents unmatched power, ferocity, and the triumph of order over chaos. Yali is a protector from both physical and spiritual evil.
The design is not unique to this temple Yali pillars adorn many Vijayanagara structures but each carving is distinct, carrying its own narrative through posture, expression, and ornamentation.
One must wonder why is Vyala or Yali as a creature so popular in art across South Asia? Why did master sculptors return to the Yali motif again and again? Was it simply decorative, or did they believe that these mythical guardians truly protected the temple from unseen forces?
